Anna Paquin was born in the city of Winnipeg, but was raised in Wellington. She made her acting debut as Flora McGrath in the romantic drama film The Piano. Paquin is a Canadian as well as a New Zealand actress. She was born in Winnipeg however, she was raised in Wellington, she made her first acting appearance as a character in The Piano. In response to an audition Flora McGrath was cast as the daughter a Scottish musician. Flora McGrath is the child of a mute Scottish musician who moved into New Zealand to marry in the 19th century. When she was a teenager her family relocated into the United States. Paquin had a small part in the film's title role when she was still a kid as part of Franco Zeffirelli's Jane Eyre (1996) as well as she was a leading character in the film Fly Away Home (1996). Paquin appeared as Frankie Addams, a character in Carson McCullers' novel The Member of the Wedding in 1997. In Steven Spielberg's Amistad in 1997 her character was the queen of Spain in a smaller character. She played teenagers as part of Hurlyburly (1998), She's All That (2000), A Walk on the Moon (2000) and played in the role of character of the polexia Aphrodisa girl on the screen in Almost Famous (2000).
